Press release

September 7-9. Askeri Gallery takes part in Cosmoscow International Contemporary Art Fair 2018. Booth E3.

Askeri Gallery participates in Cosmoscow International Contemporary Art Fair for the second time.

This year the gallery presents works by Peter Opheim (USA) and Gleb Skubachevsky (Russia). Working in different artistic directions, artists explore the boundaries between contemporary sculpture, object and painting. American and Russian artists have much in common: they combine the search for and creation of new worlds – anthropomorphic and quasi-natural, and their connections with human society.

Peter Opheim is American-based artist, who was born in Germany. Opheim has had more than 30 exhibitions around the world. He currently works in New York. Peter Opheim devises fictional characters by making small figures out of clay and then paints their portraits on large-format canvases. Some of his creations have anthropomorphic shapes; others resemble children's cartoon characters. Opheim’s bizarre heroes friend, walk, feel lonely. ‘I create imaginary figures to talk about what it means to be human, our shared humanity’, the artist explains. Peter Opheim first showed his works in Russia, at the Askeri Gallery in March 2018.

Gleb Skubachevsky graduated from the V. Surikov Moscow State Art Institute (Aidan Salakhova's class). Skubachevsky worked in many residences abroad. In the DEAC residence in Montenegro he has developed a recognizable technique for creating sculptural objects on canvas. Skubachevsky offers to percept his objects as species of alien organisms ‘Anima Aliena’. The artist puts the viewer in a situation of meeting with a new, extraterrestrial type of life. Skubachevsky believes that creativity is a way of exploring the unknown: ‘It seems very interesting to think about life-forms that exist on Earth and in the Universe Why not to model on canvas objects similar to extraterrestrial organisms? They are primitive forms of life. Some of them are animals, others are plants, and we will find them for sure! But how long should we wait for space expeditions to other planets and other planetary systems?! I am tired of waiting: I create my own world and begin to populate it with incredible creatures!’
