Krasnodar, 1991
Gleb Baranov is a Russian artist who lives and works in Krasnodar. In her practice, she explores the phenomenon of ethical norms, their boundaries and variability in different communities, as well as their interaction with aesthetics. The artist is interested in how ethical norms manifest themselves and construct reality depending on the context. In his works, Gleb also addresses the themes of desire and alienation, asking questions about the nature of our true desires and our ability to recognize them.
The central principle of his practice is the idea of travel as immersion in an alien environment with a different language and ethical standards. This makes it possible to actualize intuitive interaction with the world and emphasize the person's out of sync with reality. The artist asks the question of whether we are able to react differently in new circumstances.
Gleb draws inspiration from personal experiences: working as a sailor, being fascinated by Japanese popular culture, traveling through the digital landscapes of video games and keeping diary entries. In his works, he uses painting and graphics, using saturated colors to convey the intensity of the moment.
In his approach to art, Gleb Baranov relies on the traditions of pop art, where media images embedded in everyday life are of key importance. He reinterprets tradition to indicate his critical position in relation to the established discourse of contemporary art. Gleb suggests looking at "amateur", non-conventional practices from a different angle in order to show their relevance and potential in our days.
