1986, South Korea
Artist and sculptor Seyngjin Yang was born and raised in the east of Korea. In 2013, he graduated from Hongik University with a bachelor's degree in Metalworking and Design.
Seungjin Yang's art is inspired by the softness and mobility of the shapes of an ordinary balloon. It is exposed to the environment, light and transparent, but at the same time, in the artist's interior sculptures, the balloon becomes durable and stable, and at the same time, in addition to its childlike carefree lightness, it acquires "weight" and utility.
The "Blowing" series is entirely made up of balloons of various shapes and colors. After inflating each balloon, the designer applies layer after layer of epoxy resin to it until it reaches the required level of strength and stability. This is a painstaking and energy-intensive process: the artist spends about eight hours covering the chair with a single layer of epoxy resin. All the processes of creating a new art object take about a week.
The result of this work is impressive and inspiring: unusual, bright objects, at first glance ephemeral and airy, in practice turn out to be durable and reliable.
Thus, the original form becomes a curious metaphor for the human soul, which often hides many mysteries. Inflatable, toy-like pieces of furniture from Seungjin Yang are made from balloons and coated with epoxy resin for durability and comfort of use. Balloons are a direct appeal to the childhood that exists in each of us, and interaction with which gives us a much–needed foothold. Seungjin Yang is a beloved artist of the world's largest designers, including Kelly Westler, as well as a regular participant in Design Miami and other major global art events.
